Athens I: Socrates’ Defence

We embark on a quest to delve into the profound intellect of the ancient Greek philosopher, Socrates.

He etched his name in history through his compelling defence before the Athenian jury when he faced accusations of corrupting the city's youth. This transpired during a turbulent period of rewriting laws in Athens following a war, a time when Socrates, an unrelenting questioner and a breaker of conventions, earned him enemies like many others.

While the term 'Apologia' means 'apology' in many Western languages, Socrates' words were more than a mere defence; they mirrored the unwavering convictions of a philosopher. His questioning of those believed to be the wisest without ever making such a claim was the root of his scrutiny and the enmity he garnered. By exposing the lack of true wisdom in those who claimed to possess it, Socrates paradoxically earned the title of 'the wisest.' He was, in reality, a philosopher who humbly embraced his ignorance, living in constant awareness of it.

Despite his conviction and an affirmed death sentence, Socrates neither implored for mercy nor sought an alternative punishment. Instead, he welcomed his fate and said his parting words: 'The time has come for me to depart; I to die, you to live. God knows which is better.'
