Alexandria: Hypatia’s Journey

Hypatia drew from three fundamental pillars to unravel the mysteries of nature: Logic, mathematics, and experimentation. Unfortunately, her tragic fate unfolded in the city of her birth, Alexandria.

Born to a mathematician, Hypatia ascended to become a profoundly erudite scholar, imparting wisdom within the hallowed halls of the Library of Alexandria. This institution served as a vibrant centre for thinkers and philosophers of the time, housing an extensive collection of ancient texts and parchments.

Hypatia's presence in this intellectual circle kindled the minds of many luminaries in Alexandria. Born into a pagan tradition, she met a tragic end, lynched and killed during the early spread of Christianity in Alexandria, initiated by Bishop Cyril.

Following Hypatia's demise, a devastating conflagration consumed the Library of Alexandria, the repository of centuries of knowledge. An estimated 150,000 manuscript volumes met their demise, extinguishing a trove of wisdom. Here, you will acquaint yourself with the opulence once harboured by the Library of Alexandria and the indelible legacy of Hypatia, a female scholar who etched her name in history during the 4th century.
