Bethlehem: Saint Mary

The concept of saints was introduced with Christianity, referring to those who walk the sacred path alongside Jesus. But what elevates Mary, the mother of Jesus, to the status of a saint?

The primary reason for Mary's veneration as a saint is her life untainted by sin, dedicated to Jesus, who is revered as the Christian leader and messiah. According to the New Testament, Mary's significance transcends her role as Jesus' mother. Her life is marked by compassion and support for those in need. It is recounted that Mary played a pivotal role in Jesus' first miracle, transforming water into wine at a wedding. Even as her son suffered on the cross, she stood by to alleviate his pain.

Mary, who led an honourable and virtuous life in harmony with Christian values, is commemorated as a saint, the subject of prayers and reverence for countless Christians.

Within this room dedicated to Saint Mary, a ceiling painting illustrates her compassion, preserving her memory through ornamental artefacts.
